Chapter 13

Bane

I pressed my lips together, unsure what to tell my lead alpha. Did Lenny run out to get Venom? Maybe Venom sent the prospect to watch me.

That idea didn’t sit well with my grizzly at all. Don’t make assumptions yet, I reminded myself.

“It’s stuffy in here. Let’s talk outside,” Venom said.

Without another word, Venom opened the door leading to the parking lot. I followed him, glad he initiated the conversation.

The night breeze felt wonderful on my face. Coming outside had been a good idea.

My grizzly was beginning to feel a little claustrophobic, being stuck in the kitchen with another predator.

“You should be getting better, now that Jules is living with you, not worse,” Venom remarked.

He pulled out a pack of cigarettes, then lit one. Venom offered me a stick, but I shook my head.

“I thought you promised Casper you’d quit smoking?” I asked, not addressing the topic at all.

I wasn’t ready, but Venom only waited until I grew uncomfortable with the silence.

Cunning bear, I thought. The other bears usually went to Mayhem when it came to sensitive matters.

The fact Venom approached me directly told me my lead alpha was concerned about my well-being.

“I’ve been holding back with Jules,” I admitted.

“Is there a reason for that?” Venom asked.

Instinctively, I clenched my fists by my side. Venom was keeping his aggressive energy well contained, but the monster living in me continued to see Venom as a threat.

“Venom, look at me. I don’t have a handle on my grizzly anymore. What if I end up hurting Jules for real?” I demanded.

The anger in my voice surprised me. Venom remained calm, as I expected.

“The two of you are fools,” Venom finally said, finishing his smoke.

“Did you just call me a fool?” I asked, a growl in my voice.

“That’s right. I can’t believe I need to spell it out for you, Bane. You’re usually more perceptive than this.”

Venom sighed, then continued, “Jules is the last person you would ever hurt. He’s your fated mate. You would harm yourself and others first, before touching a single hair on his head.”

“I’m not so certain,” I confessed. “Lately, there’s a war brewing inside me. My human half is losing to my beast.”

“Learn to let go of everything that’s keeping you back from forming a true bond with Jules,” Venom suggested. “What you need is distraction. A goal to work towards.”

I mulled over his advice for a few moments, then came up with a solution.

“The vampire hunting Jules,” I answered. “I could focus on that.”

“There you go. Since you know what to do, I’ll leave you. I need to pick Chase up from daycare,” Venom grumbled.

“Venom,” I called out.

Venom was walking towards his pickup. He paused and looked over his shoulder.

“What?” He asked, sounding grumpy and annoyed, just like his usual self.

“What if I fail?” I asked.

“We’ll discuss that when you get there. I have faith in you, Bane,” Venom replied.

Venom gave me a wave, then entered his vehicle. I recalled he used the truck whenever he had to pick up Chase from school.
